How Watching “Paw Patrol” Helps Me Cope With Anxiety (Tools To Coping With Anxiety)

We all have different coping skills when it comes to handling anxiety and the challenges it brings. One of my coping mechanisms is watching Nick Jr.’s animated show Paw Patrol! Although I’m 24 -years old and in college, studying creative writing, you might be wondering what is Paw Patrol and how did I get introduced to paw patrol?

What Is Paw Patrol

Paw Patrol is an animated series shown on Nick Jnr following the adventures of Ryder and his gang of pups living in Adventure Bay. Each episode sees the pups face a problem that needs solved either on land or sea. There are 8 different pups, each having a specific profession based around the emergency services.

My Introduction to Paw Patrol

It all started for me a few years ago. When I first struggling with the feeling of being trapped in my body because of my cerebral palsy. And trying to deal with the reality that I’m stuck in a body that I don’t have much control over and that my brain will never be free form this condition. Which causes me to have sleepless nights, spasms 24-7, or struggle to do task that others might find simple like putting on shoes or going to bathroom. All of these constant obstacles cause me to have struggle with anxiety which is common for young adults with Cerebral palsy.

When I first discovered that I was suffering from anxiety, I felt like I was not getting any relief out of the things I was told I needed to do to reduce my anxiety attacks from happening. I felt lost, and that I had this constant feeling of having a plastic bag over my head. Which felt like it was taking the life out of me every day, causing me to suffer from anxiety attacks over and over again.

It wasn’t until my then boyfriend recommend I watched Nick Jr’s Paw Patrol with him. He too had cerebral palsy and he had the same struggles as I did.

From the minute, I saw Chase, Marshall, Skye, Zuma, Tracker, Rocky, Rubble and Everest, my body becomes relaxed and I instantly feel like I could breathe again!

What I’ve Learned From Paw Patrol

As I watch paw patrol I remember through the lessons being taught that a problem always has a situation. And most of all the feeling that I have when I face issues with my anxiety every day! I remember that it takes baby steps and that nothing gets easier but you have to keep going despite the obstacles you’re facing in your life just like I do with my anxiety and spastic Cerebral palsy. It has taught me that I can’t give up on my challenges because I’m having a rough day with feeling anxious or having a lack of movement due to my chronic pain with Cerebral palsy.

Thanks to watching Paw Patrol I’m reminded that I’m a strong woman and I could overcome anything that comes in my way and I will overcome anything just like the characters on the show.

The holiday season is fast approaching, which means its that time of year where you get to together with family or friends. For someone like myself who has Cerebral Palsy this time of year can be a lot more challenging, as opposed to someone without a disability.

Although I enjoy getting together with my family during the holidays, It can be a difficult time for me. It can be overwhelming and cause feelings of being left out, which can make the holidays hard to deal with.

Although I enjoy getting together with my family during the holidays, It can be a difficult time for me. It can be overwhelming and cause feelings of being left out, which can make the holidays hard to deal with.

6 Tips To Get You Through The Holidays

I decided to write down and share the 6 tips that I use on how to cope with Cerebral Palsy during the holidays. These tips are by no means limited to someone with Cerebral Palsy, they may also be helpful to anyone who finds the holiday season hard to cope with

Try To Remain Positive During The Holidays

I understand that sometimes Cerebral Palsy, disability, and chronic illnesses can be a pain in the butt to deal with especially when you’ve been out socializing, visiting loved ones or doing activities that require you to move around more than you would normally. It can be exhausting, but you should try to have a positive attitude about your situation.

Spend Time With Friends

Sometimes having Cerebral palsy could make you feel lonely at times. It’s a good idea to spend time with friends that understand what you’re dealing with. I know from experience that hanging with my friends with Cerebral palsy helps me out a lot.

Have A Plan For When You Feel Overwhelmed

The holidays could be an anxious time for many with chronic illnesses and disabilities. I especially begin to feel anxious about the idea of having to go on a vacation to see family, disrupting the day to day routine. To attempt to minimise the disruption and the potential feelings of being overwhelmed and anxious I pack all the things that help me when I’m feeling anxious, like my favorite movies to keep me calm.

Express your emotions

If you’re feeling overwhelmed about the holidays and your disability. Talk to your family or friends. Expressing what you are feeling, means that you could come up with a game plan to help get you through the holidays. You’re all in this together and maybe they’ll agree with you on certain things.

Listening to your favorite type of music might help to relax your body. For me listening to country music has always been my go-to when it comes to coping with situations with my Cerebral palsy.

Try To Relax

Listening to your favorite type of music might help to relax your body. For me listening to country music has always been my go-to when it comes to coping with situations with my Cerebral palsy. Listening to Blake Shelton’s Christmas album to help me escape from reality and it also helps me relax my muscles form the possible triggers I might face.

Find Activities That Are Inclusive To All

Find activities that you can do that won’t cause you to feel left out! Believe it or not, there are many activities you can do with your friends and family that won’t cause you to feel left out. My favorite activities to do with my family is dancing to Spanish music and its something that I can do.

Although having Cerebral Palsy may not be easy, I’m thankful for the experiences that it has given me and it the best gift I could ever receive this holiday season.

7 Ways to Find Peace of Mind and Inner Calm

All our life, we keep on seeking peace of mind but it is important to understand that it is not something we can buy or seek. We often get indulged in the process of seeking peace rather than attaining it. Happiness or peace is not something we can grasp, it comes from within. Yes, of course, we can try to meet people we love or buy things we like but peace is not just confined till materialistic pleasure. In this process of seeking peace and calm, we chase people, we get inclined towards things which we guess could get us into a better position but truly one cannot chase or grasp peace. Have you ever met someone who remains calm most of the time? Who does not react abruptly even if something bad happens? Maybe that person is at peace and so nothing easily disturbs him or her.

Peace Is Different For Everyone

The definition of peace could vary from one person to another, one might like to sit at home with a cold coffee, watching Netflix or another person might want to explore the world. It differs but it does not mean seeking peace in the next moment. Maybe the next job could be better, maybe another relationship, moving to a different city or place could give us peace is not a good state of mind. If we keep on doing this, we are stuck in the loop of seeking peace. In this process, we feel lost and dull. Our entire personality is devastated as we are too busy discovering things about others but not ourselves. If you want peace, start living in the present, it is important to realize the importance of momentary happiness. When you start living every moment, when you start understanding the importance of present and start living every moment to the fullest, you start taking steps towards attaining peace.

The definition of peace could vary from one person to another, one might like to sit at home with a cold coffee, watching Netflix or another person might want to explore the world. It differs but it does not mean seeking peace in the next moment.

We often come across people who are suffering from depression or stuck with regular panic attacks or anxiety, the reason is they believe that peace or happiness is in the next moment. There is no next moment. When you start getting sure about things, when you decide to end your confusion and take a step towards living the life right now, you are following the correct path. It is normal to keep on looking for happiness but peace is different. You have to collect a lot of happy moments to get close to the calmness your mind deserves. Yes, you can implement certain rules in your life that could make your life a little easier. You can check out some of the important ways by which you can try to develop a state of mind that is calm and peaceful.

How to find Peace and Inner Calm?

Yes, it is a fact that we cannot calculate and find peace. It does not have any blueprint yet we can practice some activities that can at least help us to get over the temporary problems we are dealing with. You can check out some of the common ways to deal with it. Have a look, try to read, understand and implement in the process of seeking a better life ahead.

Stop Being too Serious

Why so serious? You must have come across this famous dialogue. Eventually, it is not just a dialogue, it’s philosophy itself. It is good to be serious in life and take important decisions yet it is not a great idea to take yourself too seriously. It is important to know how to turn a problematic situation into a good one. We often criticize people who prefer being humorous and solving out things but probably they are the ones living their life to the fullest. If you are serious enough to make commitments, you should also know the ways to figure out things if the commitment did not go well. If you are serious all the time, it is a possibility that you might get inclined towards the negative thoughts. You might face many difficulties but if you are dealing with it with a positive perspective, things do not get heated up. Your acceptance level increases and you develop a habit of involving in the situation positively.

Increase the Horizon of Acceptance

It is important to accept things as they are without adding any extra flavor of over-thinking and assumptions to it. You can wake up in the morning and challenge yourself that everything that comes your way, you would accept it and then react or respond to it. Acceptance is important because without accepting you cannot respond appropriately. You must listen to everything the other person is saying, you must observe and then analyze and then react. When we stop accepting things, it leads to unnecessary quarrels and not needed worries. So, try to listen, accept and then react.

Be You!

You might be messy one day and classy on the other. So, try to accept that a bad day does not make you a bad person. You must accept yourself, all your flaws, confusion, doubts and mess is yours and you should never be ashamed or embarrassed to accept it. Make sure that you do accept all your imperfections and strive to make it better. Be sure that only you can turn your imperfections into perfections.

Don’t be too Harsh on Yourself

You would come across many situations in life when you would question your existence? But wait a minute before doing it. It is ok if you made any mistake; it is ok if you are not doing well. Try to be your best friend. Do not ever question your self-esteem, you can do wonders.

Permit Yourself to Feel

You must feel everything. Make sure you go through every phase; make sure you cry your heart out when you need to. Make sure you laugh out loud when you are feeling like too. The power to feel is everything. You must understand that numb is not good. Allow yourself to feel what you like to, what you want to.

Get Over the Past

Most of us are not at peace because we are stuck in nostalgia. You must understand that you should not cling to the past and ruin your present. Try to forgive yourself for all the pathetic decisions you took, all the bad people you gave chance to. It is ok to be not perfect. Make yourself feel comfortable by letting out all the bad memories. Try to revive the energy, make sure you do not hold any past grudges. It is important to know the importance of ‘let go’

Meditation is helpful

Apart from all the above activities, self-care is important too. You can try mediation to avoid panic attacks and anxiety. You can play a soothing track, try to calm down, relax and meditate. Allow yourself to feel everything. Research shows that meditation gives you proper space and time to think, feel and act. So, do not hesitate and try to build a tension-free world for yourself.

A Guide to Coping With Shoulder Pain

Coping with Shoulder Pain

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body. This leaves our shoulders vulnerable to injury through the actions we carry out in our everyday lives. Waking up with shoulder pain and tension can be very disturbing to your daily routine. It can become a struggle to complete daily household work and chores. Shoulder pain can have many causes, from injury to tension, to having slept in an uncomfortable position the night before. Shoulder pain can also be triggered by sports, gym exercises, or lifting heavy items. Pain medication can help, however, the relief may only last a few hours and may not be enough on its own to adequately manage the pain. Here are some home remedies that can help lessen shoulder pain:

Cold compress:

Applying ice to the sore area can both numb the area and reduce inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, and cramps. Ice is also great for use after exercise or after prolonged, painful activity.

Microwaveable heat pack:

The warmth from these heat packs can help reduce the pain, muscle stiffness, and muscle spasms that may be the cause of your shoulder pain. These are little fabric cases that are often filled with wheat that you can stick in the microwave and put on your shoulder or any other sore spot.

Anti-inflammatory medication:

Anti-inflammatory medication: In the case of injury, arthritis, or tendonitis, anti-inflammatory medication can help reduce inflammation and therefore reduce pain. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories you can purchase include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen

Anti-inflammatories can help reduce shoulder pain

These home remedies for shoulder pain are especially great for when you experience shoulder pain at night and have no access to a medical professional’s help. If your shoulder pain is ongoing and is becoming bothersome it is advisable that you consult a doctor to ensure there is nothing seriously wrong. This can sometimes result in an X-ray in order to attempt to identify the source of your pain.

Yoga

Once the cause of your shoulder pain has been discovered and your doctor has given you the all clear, yoga can be incredibly helpful with relieving pain, bringing back strength, and increasing mobility. Yoga can also help with inflammation in other areas of the body. Studies have been done that show that people who do yoga regularly experience less inflammation overall than those who don’t. Yoga poses that work well for shoulder pain include shoulder roles, neck role, and the downward-facing-dog against the wall. If while you’re doing yoga you experience sharp or stabbing pain, tingling, or numbness, it may be wise to avoid that pose for a week or two.

Stretches

Stiffness or tightness in the shoulders can limit movement; and if it goes untreated, it can cause tension headaches. If yoga isn’t your thing, then simple stretches are an easy way to relieve shoulder pain and tightness. Stretches that work well for shoulder pain include the cross-body-shoulder-stretch, cross body arm swings, and a stretch called the cow-face pose. Stretching can also help improve posture, which is important for preventing back and shoulder pain.

Yoga can reduce shoulder pain

If the pain still persists after a few weeks, it may be beneficial to look into consulting a Physical therapist.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy is often recommended for treatment of an injury or rehab after surgery. Physical therapy treatment often starts off with an initial evaluation where you are asked about your pain and what triggers it. The strength and movement in your shoulder may also be tested. After this assessment, the treatment can begin. You may receive massages and be given a home-exercise-program specifically tailored to you to help the strength and mobility of your shoulder. You should be able to notice an improvement in your shoulder within a few weeks. If your shoulder pain still continues to persist, you may need to see a specialist.

Shoulder pain and tension is a common, yet often treatable affliction. These treatments for shoulder pain can help keep your shoulder mobile and strong. In the case of severe pain, consult your doctor or physiotherapist before doing any exercises such as stretches or yoga

A letter from your disabled ex

Chronic Illness tests even the strongest relationships; causing some to fail. This letter is to all those who have been through breakups. May you find your source of light.

Dear Ex,

Hi, its me, your chronically ill ex. I’m writing this letter to tell you all the things I never got to say.

First, I want to thank you for being with me through the rough moments my health caused.  With you by my side, the hospital stays, surgeries and emergency room visits were a little less terrifying. I want to thank you for holding me on the days where I couldn’t get out of bed. Thank you for making me smile whenever all I wanted to do was cry.

I often wondered if I was cursed with all that’s wrong with me, but you were the constant reminder that there were still good things in life.

I realize it isn’t easy loving someone who needed so much help, but you never made me feel like any less of a person. You always made me feel as if I still mattered. My illness was something we both battled. You were my partner, my ally, my best friend.

As my body changed, you never made me feel any less beautiful. You promised me the disease could never make me any less beautiful, because the beauty you saw came from my soul. You never complained about staying home with me instead of traveling the world and visiting theme parks like our friends did. Our paradise was our time together.  I didn’t have to travel to exotic places, because my whole world was beside me.

Even though we are not together now, I want to thank you for being a light in the darkness.
I always attributed your presence to what saved me from utter darkness and despair.

I saw you as the source of light in my life.

And then I realized something!
When there is much deep, pitch- black, darkness any speck of light seems brighter.
My illness was so devastating it created so much darkness in my life, of course you seemed to be the brightest light in the universe.

But you didn’t save me. You didn’t shield me from the darkness.
I did. I saved me.
I kept my own internal light burning.
I held onto the light within my soul,

When you left, I felt like the only light in my life had gone out. But I quickly saw that I had always been holding onto my own light all along. My spirit inside me was what kept me alive all these years, not you.
As much as it hurts to see you truly abandon me, it made me realize that I never really needed you at all.
The light I thought you were came from me the whole time.

So, I wish you well, former love.  Thank you for helping me realize the power within myself.

Sincerely,
     Your Chronically Ill Ex

Using Meditation Strategies to Help Cope with Life While Experiencing Chronic Illness

Using Meditation Strategies to Help Cope with Life While Experiencing Chronic Illness

You’ve probably heard about the health benefits of yoga in improving mental and physical health, and in improving flexibility. Due to the shared benefits, the words ‘yoga’ and ‘meditation’ are often thought of as synonyms. Although meditation can be incorporated into yoga, they are different practices. While I was skeptical of meditation at first, it has indeed helped me to manage my stress and life while living with Multiple Sclerosis, chronic pain, and fatigue.

How Meditation Works

Meditation involves clearing your mind while maintaining a state of awareness. Or at least trying to! It is much more than sitting and concentrating in a quiet area for a designated amount of time; it involves calming your mind of all thoughts, achieving a deep inward peace, and maintaining attention and alertness in the process.

Have I gotten to the complete deep inward peace thing? Nope, not yet. But I have found that meditation is an excellent way to relax, to calm my anxious mind, and to take the focus off of my pain.

People often use certain postures, breathing techniques, and even chants to help facilitate the process of meditating, but these are not required. They are not the act of meditation itself, just the support tools. Personally, I like to meditate in my favorite recliner or in my bed because it’s most comfortable for me.

Meditation with Chronic Illness

Stress as a Spoonie is Extra Hard On Your Body

Meditation makes the body less responsive to stress hormones, which lowers blood pressure, improves blood circulation, improves digestion and immunity, and establishes emotional and neurological “balance.”

How does this work exactly?

According to what I’ve learned, it mostly comes down to hormones. Stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin increase blood pressure and heart rate, while “feel good” chemicals, such as serotonin, (which are released in a state of relaxation), work to repair cells.

Tips on Getting Started with Meditation

As a beginner, taking a meditation class, watching a video, or using an app that introduces you to the concept of meditation is the easiest way to get started. A guided meditation teaches you various techniques for facilitating the process. It is not as easy as I thought it would be, but I’m glad to have another calming tool in my toolbox.

Using apps to aid meditation to help cope with chronic illness

You may be able to find a class in your community that is specifically dedicated to meditation, but for me, it’s been easier to learn through online tools. Some meditation videos/audios can be found for free online. Try searching YouTube, or downloading an app. If you prefer a mix of yoga and meditation, the best types of yoga to focus on include Kundalini, Ananda, Jivamukti, and Integral.

Research shows that just 20 minutes of consistent meditation sessions can have tremendous health benefits. When my therapist suggested I try it, I was skeptical. There was no way I could do it for twenty full minutes! So I started with just five minutes at a time. Meditating before you go to bed can help you to fall asleep too. Personally, falling asleep is a struggle, and I have noticed that I fall asleep much faster if I meditate in bed.

Try getting outside! Many people find that sitting in nature – I just sit on my back porch – helps them to facilitate the process of meditation. It’s also a great way to get outside and absorb some Vitamin D.

Try meditation out side to help cope with chronic illness

Of course, everyone is different. To get started, experiment with different ways of meditating to see what work for you and what helps you the most. Also, try meditating at different times of the day and for different periods of time to find what works. It’s okay if you cannot calm your mind completely, (I rarely can!), you can still get many benefits from making the effort. Remember, you and your health are worth that effort!

Blake Shelton and Music as a Coping Tool for Chronic Illnesses

How listening to country music helps me cope with cerebral palsy and chronic illnesses

When it comes to having chronic illnesses such as chronic hip pain due to my cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects mostly in the left side of my body. Life can get pretty hectic, sometimes it mixes that in with having the diagnosis of depression and anxiety.

People always ask me what gets me through it. What helps you when you can’t control your body? And you can’t control what it’s doing, although you’re a writer and you love to write, but when you can’t control the days where your chronic illness makes you feel defeated. What do you do when you feel trapped in your body, because you’re in so much pain that you can’t write? How do you cope with that?

Coping When You Can’t Control Your Body

Well ever since I was 13 years old, I have been a huge fan of country music, because it tells a story of someone’s life. It takes you to a whole different world. A world where my mind could escape from the reality I’m facing at the moment, when having these episodes where I feel like I can’t control my body.

What do you do when you feel trapped in your body, because you're in so much pain that you can't write? How do you cope with that? Music helps me.

One of the country stars that help me cope is Blake Shelton. Every time I feel like I’m losing control of the situation, because of my chronic pain and Cerebral Palsy, I play his first album. I listen to the words of the song Austin it claims me down and relaxes my body.

Blake Shelton also has a gift of telling a story in such a powerful way that makes the story seem real. It makes me feel like I’m living in that storyline as the songs play.

I hear the voice of Blake Shelton, and it brings me out of my reality for just those few moments where I feel like a monster has taken over my body and it’s winning my battle against chronic pain. Plus, all of my other issues that I have to face in my everyday life.

With my condition, Blake Shelton gives me peace in mind that along the lines of my crazy hectic life with Cerebral Palsy and chronic illnesses that I am strong and I can make it through

Peace of Mind Through Music

With my condition, Blake Shelton gives me peace of mind that along the lines of my crazy hectic life with Cerebral Palsy and chronic illnesses that I am strong and I can make it through anything.

Hopefully, one day, he’ll be singing one of the country songs that I wrote for him. Since I have dreams of becoming a songwriter one day and I’m currently going to school for creative writing for entertainment, I’m working towards my goals and dreams so that the story of my journey can be told with the words I write.

How to Reduce Stress through Yoga

How To Reduce Stress Through Yoga

Disability or chronic illnesses are perhaps not the things one can ever completely overcome. Does this also mean there is no way around being plagued with acute stress and anxiety emerging out of illness situations for the rest of life?

Yoga reliefs stress and anxiety

The mind-body technique of yoga suggests, one can discipline herself past stress and anxiety, and culture more calmness, acceptance and gratitude. The thousand-year old practice is known to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system– the section that initiates restfulness and subsequent healing functions in the body. Also, yoga is observed to increase the GABA or gamma-amino butyric acid levels in the body. This neurotransmitter is responsible for making you feel oodles of tranquility.

The benefit of yoga for the chronically ill or specially-abled may actually have nothing to do with treating symptoms. What yoga therapy majorly addresses is the baggage of emotional turmoil that comes with a difficult diagnosis. While you would most definitely need to gather up all your will and execute your problem-solving attitude and positive intuition to live with disability or illness, yoga can help you feel calm and grounded.

Here is why you should consider adding yoga to your self-care for mitigating stress.

To Develop an Innate Coping Technique

Chronic illnesses have a way of fluctuating in the magnitude of their effects on the body. One day it’s just dull, ignorable and the day next it gets absolutely insufferable. While medication, seasonal change or appropriate lifestyle can provide some relief here and there, there is no guarantee that there isn’t a particularly bad phase lurking in the corners.

While coping mechanism is something every individual should work on to make getting by smoother, for the chronically ill or specially-abled, it’s especially necessary. Yoga sequences, both in restorative styles and high-energy rigorous flow styles, lay out an adaptive exercise pattern. Yoga practitioners systematically internalize rhythmically pacing and adapting to intensive phases.

Once you are on top of your down-dog, you probably won’t get so rattled with suddenly coming on intensive phases of your illness!

Manage chronic illness with Yoga

To Help Boost Cognition and Memory

Dealing with chronic illness or disability often takes a toll in the form of cognitive dysfunction. Often there is confusion in conducting day to day affairs, failing memory and lack of focus. The feeling is much like not being able to sleep for days and then sitting down to understand quadratic equations. The mind being an inseparable extension of the physical body is naturally prone to getting affected by the tribulations of the body.

The innate breath-centered focusing exercise in yogic discipline provides great improvement in this regard. Mindfulness becomes a second nature the more and more one gives in to the practice. Subsequently memory and relative cognitive capacities improve to.

Time you stay sharp with yoga!

To Deal With Your Emotional Excesses Healthily

The emotional backlash of coming to terms with a difficult diagnosis can be immense. To stay strong and develop a positive problem-solving attitude in these times is a severe challenge. It is natural to experience extreme trepidation and lack of self-reliance, pushing one to the brink of a breakdown, and that is when yoga can become a tool for healthily channelizing these emotional upheavals.

The practice of yoga reflects restoration, you learn not to be too hard on yourself. Yoga is about turning the gaze inwards, you learn to accept. Yoga exemplifies how simple discipline and practice can expand perceived boundaries. It’s the beginning of the realization that you are infinite. Incapacities are suddenly less magnified and you can win back your self-reliance.

To Find Quality Self-Time

Diagnosis of chronic illness and disability is many times comprehended tragically as end of self-sufficiency. One is made to revise life’s priorities and forced to deal with a sea change in working systems of life. A person diagnosed chronically ill can be prohibited to drive on her own on medical counsel, for example. Changed circumstances can be harrowing and exhaustive for both the patient and those around her. The essentiality of some quality me-time yet remains and yoga can be an effective way to find that space.

The more you learn to delve inwards, unknot your worries as you do your body joints and muscles, more would you learn to see your way around the challenges of illness and disability.

To Learn Acceptance

To be in denial or wishing away the hardship is perhaps the faultiest mechanisms to deal with health handicaps. On the same note, you cannot let your illness or disability magnify into something bigger than it is and get the better of you. To have an objective take on the subject is ideal and also perhaps the hardest task. To accept life as it is and making the best of situation is the kind of wiring that let us succeed in the battle and yoga s a discipline is full of this perspective.

As you employ your body and mind to task in the meditative asanas, take measure of the infinite possibilities that you hold, despite the illness and despite the perceived disability. Thrive!

Utilizing yoga as therapy to deal with the stress of special conditions can be a huge basis for chronic illness and disability support.

Take the path.
